As far as I’m concerned, Monster Hunter Tri was conceived in a smoky Nintendo backroom whilst Satoru Iwata, Reggie Fils-Aime and Shigeru Miyamoto played a bi-monthly game of poker. The game well underway, Fils-Aime mentioned to Iwata how many Wii owners criticised the console for lacking in respectable hardcore titles. There was an off-putting silence in the room after that, but as Cammie Dunaway brought Miyamoto his sixth mint julep of the evening Iwata tipped his poker visor and announced if fans wanted a hardcore game, he’d make sure they got the most hardcore game of all.

Red Steel never happened. Forget that it sold a million copies worldwide: the original game has now been relocated into the same district of let’s-forget-it-ever-happened as Tab Clear, Joey’s spin-off series and Choco Krispies. Say goodbye, nonsensical yakuza plot and wacky time-stopping powers. The new hotness is Red Steel 2, set in some sort of futuristic wild-west and feudal Tokyo mash-up and featuring a nonsensical samurai plot.

The ocean? Brilliant. I bet there are all sorts of things to kill down there, like the batty inhabitants of an underwater capitalist society free of religion and governments. Maybe there’s some mutant sharks you need to shoot with harpoon guns, or even underwater terrorists. This is a videogame, after all.

If the dream match you’ve been waiting for since Street Fighter came about in the late eighties was a scuffle between a stable of Capcom classics and some stars from huge-in-the-seventies anime company Tatsunoko, you’re probably one of the people who petitioned for the game to be released in the West to begin with. For the rest of us, who have no idea what it means to dragon punch Yatterman-1 in the face, you’ll probably be wondering why they couldn’t have made Marvel Vs Capcom 3 instead.

The negative qualities of the Wii are often mentioned. The common ones: it’s comparatively expensive for what you get, SD graphics look crummier than ever and the supply of quality games seems to be a little on the sparse side. Say what you might about Nintendo’s money-printing license, New Super Mario Bros. Wii proves that Nintendo’s premier design guru Shigeru Miyamoto is still at the top of his game. We’ll just forget last year’s Wii Music ever happened.

If the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics were anything like Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games they’d be more fun. And snowier. And also happen in October 2009 as opposed to February 2010. But it’s not exactly like blatant accuracy is what Sega are striving for when you’re performing a loop-de-loop as the iconic anthropomorphic hedgehog in a level that’s a recognisable mash-up of the Green Hill Zone and the original level in Super Mario Bros.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It, for various reasons, lacked the magic inherent in some of the game’s previous outings. We blamed all the silly mini-games. But the Super Monkeys are back in Super Monkey Ball: Step and Roll, they’re still ensconced within balls, and the three year gap between their hurried last outing hopefully means Sega have had ample time to get used to developing for the Wii. Fingers crossed.

Yes, we all already know that, technically, Sonic would obviously win in a race. You don’t have to say it. Let’s just assume he’s putting on a good show for the punters. Or maybe he’s just got slightly out of shape after living the high life on the profits from those ten million sold units of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Whatever you thought of the game, it would be impossible to deny the immense mass-market potential furrowed within its inoffensive pearl-white casing. It turned out that a collection of accessible mini-games featuring two of the most recognisable characters in the industry was a recipe for immediate success. Who knew? It was also themed around an event the British turned out to be rather good at. Cracking work, Beijing!
